2013 LEVEL ONE (200hr Yoga Alliance Registered)

This programme will equip you with the necessary skills to teach yoga to classes or individuals. More than that, it will provide you with a comprehensive yoga education and you may undertake the training to deepen your understanding and practice of yoga rather than as a career move.

An intensive teacher training is a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in the study and practice of yoga in a supportive environment away from your normal daily routine.

We can guarantee that after completing the course, the way you do and view yoga – and probably yourself – will never be the same again.

Requirements:

Applicants must have an established yoga practice for a minimum of two years prior to starting the course.

Application Process:

Submit an application form. Application forms are available by email or from the website.

Upon acceptance, enroll with a deposit of R3,000 to secure your place on the course.

Submit full payment of course fees by two weeks before the starting date.

Read and submit a book review of one of the books on the required reading list by the start of the course.

DATES

Branch Name/ Number: Hout Bay / 16760910

Refunds & Cancellation Policy

Payment of a deposit sets a serious intention and commitment to participate in the course. The number of participants will be limited, so the deposit will secure your place on the course.

If you need to withdraw your application it will be fully refunded until 30 days before start date (15th September 201). Thereafter the course fees are not refundable but can be transferred to be used as payment for any other courses, classes and/ or retreats of Jim Harrington.

Please note also that there is an early bird discount of R1,500 for committing with full payment by 15th September 2012.

PREPARATION

Practice

A one-month intensive training course implies that the physical practices will be fairly rigorous. We acknowledge that the actual ability to perform “advanced” yoga asanas is not always a measure of progress or experience in yoga, but we do look for participants that have applied dedication or “Tapas” in their yoga practice.

So, an established dedication is therefore an important measure of ones readiness to participate in the course. An established personal self practice is also a foundation for your role as a teacher and to explore yoga more deeply.

It is recommended that you prepare for the course by establishing a regular practice of at least 1.15 hrs, four to five times per week. Please check with Jim if you are not sure if you are ready. Participants are not expected to be proficient in all asana, but are expected to demonstrate a commitment to be present and participate to the best of their ability in all classes, with the necessary self-discipline that that implies.

Required reading

We have compiled a list of reading that is required as part of the certification on this course. Prior to your arrival you are expected to submit a written book report of 500 words on one of the books in the required reading list describing something that you have learned from the book. The purpose of this exercise is to see that you have read the book and reflected on it. This assignment is due at the start of the course.

The books on the reading list establish some basic concepts that will help in the deeper exploration of yoga during the course. We will refer to some of them in discussions. There will be little time for reading during the course, so we would advise you to try to complete some of the reading in advance.

Required Reading

Light on Yoga – BKS Iyengar

The Yoga Bible – Christina Brown

Healing without Freud or Prozac – David Servan-Schreiber

Ashtanga Yoga Practice and philosophy – Gregor Maehle

The Science of Yoga – William J Broad

Highly Recommended Reading

You do not have to read these books prior to the course, but they will elaborate on some of the topics to be studied in the course and can provide a resource for you after completion of the course.

Yoga Body – The Origins of Modern Posture Practice – Mark Singleton

The complete book of Vinyasa Yoga – Srivatsa Ramaswami

Library

There will be a lending library available for participants.

A recommended book shop for Capetonians at which to order books is the Bay Bookshop in Hout Bay (www.baybookshop.co.za). This independent bookshop is usually quicker and cheaper than Amazon. Support locally, think globally.

For some, it’s to do some “blue sky thinking” connect with creativity. For others, it is simply a sweet holiday where they get to indulge in lots of yoga.

Since 2003 Jim’s retreat locations have ranged from the scenic Cape hinterland, to exotic hills of Bali in Indonesia. 2012 saw retreats at the luxury Bushman’s Kloof Resort in the Cedarberg, a Yoga for Surfers retreat at Elands Bay on the West coast.

“I am really excited about these retreat projects, they offer people a meaningful and positive way to take a break. And in the process they get new experiences, broaden horizons and expand their yoga practice.”

2013 offers several opportunities to retreat. I will start with a local retreat in the beautiful Overberg near Capetown in March 1st to 3rd. There are exciting plans throughout the year. India and Madagascar with dates still to be confirmed, and finishing with my old favorite in Ubud, Bali from the 8th to 15th of December.

New retreats will be published under events, and detailed in the newsletter. sign up for the newsletter to stay abreast.

The Anatomy Program is 8years old now. It has been steadily evolving. Each year adding or removing a little here and there. It’s got to the point now where I feel it is covering all the most important basics for yoga teachers and practitioners without overloading them.

And in particular the safety aspects are thoroughly drilled. Not everyone wants to know the names of 200 muscles in the body. Though that is useful and ideal, it’s probably more useful to know the way that they work in unison during practice of yoga postures and breathing.

The course has just been renovated and jacked up with the latest 3D computer imagery. Visible Body 3D Anatomy Atlas I really recommend a look at this app if you have an interest in whats under the skin.

It makes medical knowledge so accessible to the mortal yoga teacher or practitioner. It is also really handy as a reference when you speak to clients about injuries or posture imbalances.

This four week program is open to anyone at a cost of R2250.00.

The Next course begins in November 2012. It is 24hrs in total on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and can be counted as a credit for the 200hr teacher training course. For more information email jim@jimharringtonyoga.com

The author Shashi Tharoor on India from the opening page of his novel that is based on the great epic the Mahabharata.

They tell me India is an underdeveloped country. They attend seminars, appear on television, even come to see me. Creasing their eight-hundred rupee suits and clutching their molded plastic briefcases, to announce in tones of infinite understanding that India has yet to develop.

Stuff and nonsense, of course.

These are the kind of fellows who couldn’t tell their Kundalini from a decomposing earthworm, and I don’t hesitate to tell them so. I tell them they have no knowledge of history and even less of their own heritage. I tell them that if they would only read the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, study the golden ages of the Mauryas and the Guptas and even of those Muslim chaps the Mughals, they would realise that India is not an underdeveloped country but a highly developed one in an advanced state of decay.

I have often wondered about the cultural significance of driving and traffic on the roads. Clearly there is a drop-down attempt to make the roads less crazy but I just can’t see it happening.

Yesterday in peak hour the cab got stuck behind a long bank of cars so he joined the scooters on an informal dirt road that had been created along a wide sidewalk area. We gunned it with horn blasting which made it safe for the pedestrians and slow scooters in front. Then on returning to the actual road. He dived in front of a moving bus. Bold as brass was the term that came to mind.

Driving here is a little like surfing on the north shore of Hawaii or some other ridiculously crowded surf spot. To get ahead one must commit to the next move, take the gap. Paddle for the wave hard. Make your intention known vigorously, i.e. blow your horn, or call everyone else off of your wave. If it doesn’t work, i.e. you don’t get the gap, the wave, or someone else beats you to it, then just move on to the next moment. Continue to flow with the traffic, knowing that it is all just a big crazy game and there isnt any point getting uptight.

Now I am going out on a bike to visit Vivekananda’s University of Yoga.

Wish me luck.

LEVEL ONE (200hr Yoga Alliance Registered)

This programme will equip you with the necessary skills to teach yoga to classes or individuals. More than that, it will provide you with a comprehensive yoga education and you may undertake the training to deepen your understanding and practice of yoga rather than as a career move.

An intensive teacher training is a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in the study and practice of yoga in a supportive environment away from your normal daily routine and habits.

We can guarantee that after completing the course, the way you do and view yoga – and probably yourself – will never be the same again.

Requirements:

Applicants must have an established yoga practice for a minimum of two years prior to starting the course.

Application Process:

Please note also that there is an early bird discount of R1,500 for committing with full payment by 15th September 2012.

PREPARATION

Practice

A one-month intensive training course implies that the physical practices will be fairly rigorous. We acknowledge that the actual ability to perform “advanced” yoga asanas is not always a measure of progress or experience in yoga, but we want to see evidence that the participant has applied “Tapas” or dedication to the practices. This is therefore an important measure of ones readiness to participate in the course. An established personal practice is an important foundation for your role as a teacher or to explore yoga more deeply.

Ashtanga Yoga the intermediate series Mythology, Anatomy, and practice– Gregor Maehle

Library

There will be a lending library available for participants.

A recommended book shop for Capetonians at which to order books is the Bay Bookshop in Hout Bay (www.baybookshop.co.za). This independent bookshop is usually quicker and cheaper than Amazon. Support locally, think globally.
