Four modules of 75 hrs each are on offer. Collectively they will make up over 300hrs. For those who have a 200hr level one course behind them, this ads to a 500hr equivalent. The third and fourth modules will take place in 2014.

The tools of the 500hr course
Asana & Pranayama | Anatomy | Philosophy | Teaching Methodology
The practical component will be require some dedication. The asana practice will draw on the content the 1st, 2nd and advanced series (3rd and 4th) of the Ashtanga Vinyasa system, but without strict adherence to Ashtanga protocols and sequencing. There will be a focus on quality of alignment, form, and therapeutic applications of asana.
Participants will develop a deeper understand the asana and pranayama and how to best instruct them. Being competent to practice and demonstrate an asana is not a necessary prerequisite to teaching it provided there is a strong anatomical understanding. There will be substantial influence from the Yoga Synergy method, particularly in the use of Mudra, Bandha and principles of alignment.
Further Anatomy and physiology study will be an important part of all modules. Pre-requisite bridging courses may be required for some participants. The first intensive module will be geared more toward establishing a solid base understanding of the anatomy and physiology so of yoga. A writen research project will be required.
Special applications for sports and individuals.
A new module to give guidelines and a framework for teaching yoga for sports people and other individuals with particular needs. This will be based on experience, case studies, analisis of Physical and psychological factors.

Psychology and Philosophy
The perceptions that prevent the full expression of ourselves, are often in the shadow areas of our psyche. These deeply rooted perceptions, while hidden from ourselves, may be visible to others. We will use processes of enquiry to clarify and challenge our own self imposed limitations. Yoga’s tools of asana, pranayama, meditation will support this process of exploration.
Further exploration into the historical, cultural and social roots of yoga will be made in order to better understand it’s relevance and place in modern life. The second intensive will take place in a traditional Yoga ashram on the banks of the River Ganges near Rishikesh in Northern India.
Teaching Methodology
This component will be designed to strengthen skills that have been established in the 200hr course. Building on those foundations with a focus on developing the qualities of a great teacher. this will include observing, sequencing, the use of voice, and development of gravitas in teaching.
Their place of leadership, and the role of a yoga teacher in the modern world.
Hi Jim, I attended your retreat at Hearth & Soul recently, (I was the not-so-young-anymore girl in the one corner). I did my 200h teacher training with Anne Combrink in Somerset West and I would love to learn more on yoga synergy. It makes so much sense to me! Now my question: Do you teach the 5 sequences in either your 200h or 500h teacher training courses or seperatedly from those? Do you teach them in retreats, (as I do not live in Cape Town)? I assume you also teach the easier versions?
Thanks for answering!
Leli
Hi Leli,
I am just checking . Did you get a reply to this enquiry.
I am teaching two beginners classes a week and intermediate and beginners courses now and then.
I used the water sequence in the first intensive module of the advanced 500 Hr course and will probably use the Air or Fire Sequence as a base practice in my next module which will take place in Rishikesh – India.
I am glad to hear that you felt that it made sense. I think so too.
And actually I am getting my teacher Simon to come out and visit for some workshops early next year. That will be great .
Please stay in touch.
Jim

A Very Good Morning to you Jim…
Debra here — I’m Presently participating in your Synergy course.
Oh My … It’s been very enlightenng and very different from my previous Ballroom dance and Bikram Teachers Training. Then, I thought I found it all when finally exposed to Vinyasa …
Synergy makes so much more sense as our bodies mature … We can still achieve these beautiful postures with integrity, patience and perseverance … Less mind – Right ?!
Thank you so much for these past 3 weeks. I look forward to the next few sessions and plan to enrol in your Air series.
Lovely seeing you on Tuesdays and Thursdays ..
Have a fabulous Sunday
