The most effective method to advance a teachers practice and skill level is through short and intense training “retreats”. In between the intensive courses there is then time and space to integrate new knowledge and put it into practice.

Four modules of 75 hrs each are on offer. Collectively they will make up over 300hrs. For those who have a 200hr level one course behind them, this ads  to a 500hr equivalent. The third and fourth modules will take place in 2014.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must have an established yoga practice as well as completed a Yoga Alliance 200 hrs. teacher training programme.

  • Upon acceptance, enrol with a deposit of R3, 000 to secure your place on the first available 75 hour module.
  • Submit full payment of the module fees by two weeks before the starting date.

 

The tools of the 500hr course

Asana & Pranayama |  Anatomy  |  Philosophy | Teaching Methodology

Asana and Pranayama practice

The practical component will be require some dedication. The asana practice will draw on the content the 1st, 2nd and advanced series (3rd and 4th) of the Ashtanga Vinyasa system, but without strict adherence to Ashtanga protocols and sequencing. There will be a focus on quality of alignment, form, and therapeutic applications of asana.

Participants will develop a deeper understand the asana and pranayama and how to best instruct them. Being competent to practice and demonstrate an asana is not a necessary prerequisite to teaching it provided there is a strong anatomical understanding. There will be substantial influence from the Yoga Synergy method, particularly in the use of Mudra, Bandha and principles of alignment.

Anatomy and physiology

Further Anatomy and physiology study will be an important part of all modules. Pre-requisite bridging courses may be required for some participants. The first intensive module will be geared more toward establishing a solid base understanding of the anatomy and physiology so of yoga. A writen research project will be required.

Special applications for sports and individuals.

A new module to give guidelines and a framework for teaching yoga for sports people and other individuals with particular needs. This will be based on experience, case studies, analisis of Physical and psychological factors.

Psychology and Philosophy

The perceptions that prevent the full expression of ourselves, are often in the shadow areas of our psyche. These deeply rooted perceptions, while hidden from ourselves, may be visible to others. We will use processes of enquiry to clarify and challenge our own self imposed limitations. Yoga’s tools of asana, pranayama, meditation will support this process of exploration.

Further exploration into the historical, cultural and social roots of yoga will be made in order to better understand it’s relevance and place in modern life. The second intensive will take place in a traditional Yoga ashram on the banks of the River Ganges near Rishikesh in Northern India.

Teaching Methodology

This component will be designed to strengthen skills that have been established in the 200hr course. Building on those foundations with a focus on developing the qualities of a great teacher. this will include observing, sequencing, the use of voice, and development of gravitas in teaching.

Their place of leadership, and the role of a yoga teacher in the modern world.
